Do Gas Saving Devices Work?

Gas mileage savers promise to lower your costs - this would be good news for those who drive a lot for business. However, 'increasing gas mileage' products are not all they claim and unfortunately for the consumer, there are lots of products purporting to improve fuel economy and increase gas mileage that don't measure up.

Many ads feature glowing testimonials by satisfied customers. Yet, few consumers have the ability or the equipment to test for precise changes in gas mileage after installing gas-saving devices. Many variables affect fuel consumption, including traffic, road and weather conditions, and the car's condition.

If the seller claims that its product has been evaluated by the EPA, ask for a copy of the EPA report, or check www.epa.gov for information. In some instances, false claims of EPA testing or approval have been made.

1) Drive Sensibly - Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town. Besides being safer, you'll be increasing gas mileage. Gas mileage improvement savings: $0.14-$0.92/gallon

2) Drive within the Speed Limit - Though every car reaches its best fuel economy at a different speed, gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. 3) Remove Excess Weight - Get rid of unnecessary items in your vehicle that add weight. An extra 100 pounds can reduce your MPG by up to 2%. 4) Avoid Excessive Idling - Engine idling gets 0 miles per gallon so you don't improve gas mileage. Cars with larger engines typically waste more gas at idle than do cars with smaller engines.

5) Use Cruise Control - Cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will better gas mileage.

6) Use Overdrive Gears - When you use overdrive gearing, your car's engine speed goes down. You get better get better gas mileage and reduce your car's engine wear.
